Hi all!

Question for those in the know...I’ve noticed in the last month or so that I sometimes smell gas around my car. Not overly strong but it’s there. I seem to notice it more (or maybe it’s just me) when the tank is 1/2 filled to fully filled.

Hoping this doesn’t mean there is a hole in my tank somewhere...it’s been very chilly here lately, so hoping it’s just something clogged frozen somewhere that will melt and then stop again.....anybody have thoughts on what it could be?

Cheers and thanks!

How old is the car? Could it be something as simple as a bad fuel cap gasket? Leaking fuel line at the injectors? Leaking injectors? Leaking fuel filter?

The last time I smelled gas around my car it had a loose fuel line under the hood. I would at least do a through inspection.

Define very chilly. G asoline has a very low freezing point; it all depends on exact composition so safe to assume it’s bellow -30 C. For reference octane freezes at -57C.

I get that in warm weather. It’s the fuel cap seal, or lack of sealing in this case. Not in the cold though.

Last year I smelled gas in the garage when I was visiting my parents. Next time I was there it was basically pouring out from the seriously rusted fuel filter on my dad’s wagon.

Front or back of the car? We were getting a strong fuel smell in the engine bay from my dad’s venture when it got cold, turns out the fuel pressure regulator was leaking.

My Magnum had this when the EVAP system went bad.  Valve on the tank gets stuck open or something.

Try to find the leak with a lighter. That’ll definitely work.......

I was gonna say something like a clogged EVAP canister. I believe if there’s enough pressure, it just vents straight into the air. Hopefully not a high enough concentration to ignite, just to smell bad.

It’s not a bimmer by any chance? The in tank fuel pumps both dissolved on my wife’s X1, along with the filler hose, causing these exact symptoms.

2009 Hyundai Accent - I don’t see any obvious gas on the ground that leaked out, but it’s been a bit wet, so hard to tell. Smell seems to be towards the side-rear of the car. Not strong , just noticeable.

I had this issue on my E30. Turns out I had a very small pin sized hole on the feed line going to the fuel pressure regulator. Swapped the line out and all was well. I also had a Mustang that had a bit of a fuel smell to it also, turns out the fuel rail was leaking a bit and needed to be swapped out. Could be a number of things honestly, will all come down to troubleshooting.

Could be the line, but I don’t SEE any leaks anywhere? Smell is coming from near the side-rear. I notice it as I get in. Don't think it's coming from the engine bay as I don't seem to smell it there!

Pretty warm compared to that. Not too bad today, but -20C or so for a day or two (with windchill).

It seems to not be quite as bad when the tank is more empty...COULD be the cap seal perhaps? I actually opened the fuel door and took a big whiff and it didn’t smell like it was coming from the cap...not noticeably stronger there?

This is on an outside driveway, so hard to see leaks, but I don’t see any under the car!

Side-rear. I notice it as I get into the car. Don’t really notice it at a ll from the front of the car or under the hood.

And it’s not even that noticeable, it’s like somewhere in between a faint whiff of gasoline and a light smell of it.

Looking at the parts diagram the fuels appear to run on the left side. On the right side other then the tank, your evap system look to be on the right.

Yup, I have a service manual! Fuel door is on the left-rear quarter on the driver’s side.

No smell in the engine bay at all. Smell is mostly on the side. I’ve not checked from the passenger side, but notice it when getting in from the drivers side (the fuel filler is in that side). Not strong but just noticeable.

99% sure it’s not the fuel cap as I’ve opened the fuel door and taken a strong sniff right next to it and it doesn’t noticeably smell like fuel any more than you'd find with any car.
